Kostas Tsimikas offered his own self-criticism after Liverpool’s dramatic victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, referring to the penalty he missed that could have ended the match earlier.
The two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and went to a penalty shootout. With the score at 4-3 in Liverpool’s favor, the Greek international fullback stepped up to take the Reds’ fifth penalty, with the chance to seal the victory.
Tsimikas, however, sent the ball wide, keeping the suspense alive. His mistake did not prove fatal, as Mamardashvili then saved Emenga’s shot, while later, Fofana missed with the score at 6-5, effectively handing Liverpool the victory.
After the game, Tsimikas didn’t try to hide behind the final result and, in a social media post, admitted that his penalty kick wasn’t what he would have liked.
“Let’s be honest. It wasn’t my best effort,” he said.
At the same time, he made sure to praise the people around him and send a message of unity following the team’s advancement.
“My team is great. My teammates are great. Our fans are great. We’re moving forward,” added the Greek left back.
