Panathinaikos was unable to extend its winning streak in the EuroLeague, suffering a well-deserved 83-68 loss to Efes in Istanbul and dropping to 7-2.
The “Greens” didn’t play as well as they’d hoped; they struggled to find their rhythm and fell behind early, playing catch-up for most of the game.
Their play improved briefly in the first half of the fourth quarter, when they attempted to mount a comeback and get more out of the game, but they were unable to see their effort through. As a result, Zeljko Obradović’s team left Istanbul empty-handed, in a game they would have liked to have handled differently.
Colin Malcolm led the winners with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Bruno Fernando added 15 points and 5 rebounds. Cameron Payne was pivotal with 14 points, 8 assists, and clutch shots. For Panathinaikos, Kendrick Nunn scored 17 points but made poor shot selections (6-for-15), while Matías Lesor put up a strong fight (5 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block) put up a strong fight.
Now, Panathinaikos turns its attention to Sunday’s game against Aris at the Alexandrio for the Stoiximan GBL (Nov. 1, 5:00 p.m.), while in the 10th round of the EuroLeague, they will face Real Madrid in Madrid (November 4, 9:45 p.m.).
Quarter scores: 21-18, 45-37, 61-51, 83-68.
