Olympiacos returns to domestic competition after a tough “2 out of 2” in the EuroLeague’s third “hellish week,” with the “Red-and-Whites” hosting Peristeri today at noon at SUNEL Arena (1:00 p.m.) for the fifth round of the Stoiximan GBL.
The “Red-and-Whites” have now racked up three consecutive wins and nine victories in their last ten games across all competitions, with Giorgos Bartzokas’s team maintaining a perfect record in the Greek league. In their most recent GBL game, the Piraeus team cruised to an impressive 85-45 victory on the road against Promitheas Patras, led by Enzai (19 pts.), Vezhenkov (14 pts., 6 reb.) and Milutinov (10 pts., 5 reb.).
However, everything in the Olympiacos “camp” has been overshadowed by the very serious injury to Jan Montero, who underwent surgery to repair the medial meniscus in his left knee, ruling him out for the next six months.
Given the absences of the injured Evan Fournier and the suspended Tyler Dorsey, the Greek and European champions’ backcourt is… understaffed, which is why the Piraeus team is scouting the market for a potential addition at the guard positions. As for the roster, aside from the three players we mentioned, there are no other issues, with Jones being off the foreign player list, as is the newly acquired John Konchar. Of course, a change could still be made tomorrow before the game, and Montero could be removed from the roster.
On the other hand, Peristeri has made an excellent impression so far this season, sitting in 7th place in the standings with a 3-1 record. Midweek, Vasilis Xanthopoulos’s team celebrated a major victory in Spain over Murcia with a score of 80-72 and went “3 for 3” in its Basketball Champions League group!
In the domestic league, they’re coming off a hard-fought 83-81 victory over Amarousios in the final game, with Ty Nichols serving as the the team’s “alpha and omega” with 18.7 points and 5 assists per game in the Stoiximan GBL.
