A heated exchange between DISY Vice President Savvia Orfanidou and AKEL Press Secretary Haris Polykarpou, against the “backdrop” of discussions regarding the 2028 presidential election.
Commenting on developments within DISY, Mr. Polycarpou spoke of “Boldness and Charm” and accused the party of collaborating with the far right in the election of Nicos Anastasiades as President of the Republic and Annita Dimitriou as Speaker of the House of Representatives. He also highlighted the danger of normalizing and institutionalizing this collaboration, both in the country’s governance and in the passage of bills in the House of Representatives.
“I respect the procedures of other parties, but in DISY we have ‘Boldness and Charm’—with passions, hatred, and tears. I wonder if DISY can give AKEL lessons on how to select a candidate.”
Ms. Orfanidou explained why DISY does not intend to cooperate with AKEL in the second round of the 2028 Presidential Elections, citing the party’s disastrous governance on economic issues and policies that “have failed spectacularly” every time the Left has entered the electoral race with its own candidate.
“Society wept in 2013 when AKEL ruined the country with poverty, food banks, business closures, misery, recession, exclusion from international markets, and trash. Society wept then, and AKEL must be concerned that it won’t weep again if it returns to power.”
