AKEL and DISY have, after some time, engaged in a war of words with a strong whiff of elections. Stefanos’s barbs at the start of AKEL’s debate on the presidential elections are not sitting well with Pindarou, who is dusting off the Christofias administration as an example.
“The one and only time they trusted AKEL to govern, it ruined the country. With their dogmatic views, they wanted to crack down on illegal explosives, and they blew up the country.”
DISY
“The dire circumstances faced by the majority of society are the result of DISY’s policies, which Nikos Christodoulides continues to pursue.”
AKEL
It’s a tangled mess, with AKEL and ELAM trading harsh blows.
“It is the party that glorifies the mass murderers of this world while receiving money and weapons from the Soviet Union.”
Sotiris Ioannou – ELAM Member of Parliament
“AKEL cannot tolerate paving the way for the far right. It is important, for example, whether ELAM will be on Christodoulides’s podium alongside DIKO and DISY.”
Haris Polykarpou – AKEL Press Spokesperson
“We are not getting involved.”
And while the parties cross swords, Nikos Christodoulides cuts short the discussion about the presidential race as it relates to him, signaling clearly that he will not respond to those accusing him of campaigning through short videos and handouts.
“Nor will we be drawn into something like that. You talk to me about handouts, and at the same time they tell us we’re not taking action. We have plenty of issues to deal with.”
Why did he mention “big money”?
He’s entering the race to win, says Giorgos Pamporidis, who, on the Alpha Enimerosi show, appears convinced that his candidacy can open the door for DISY to form coalitions.
“My candidacy can unite the DISY base and reach out to the political forces needed for us to win the election. DISY cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of 2023.”
Criticism of Averof Neophytou is particularly intense regarding the Cyprus issue and foreign policy, while he explains why he spoke of “blunders” when referring to his opponent’s actions.
“During election season, people tend to exaggerate. We can’t act like tough guys by stepping outside the boundaries just to flatter certain voters.”
At the same time, he makes it clear that it would be difficult for him to form a government with ELAM.
Giorgos Pamboridis appears open to a debate with Averof Neophytou, who chooses to say what he has to say during his meetings with the party’s grassroots. The former DISY president is planning a series of visits to party chapters in the capital over the next three days.
