The Initiative Group to Save the Mazotos Coast has voiced strong objections to the new desalination plant in Mazotos, alleging that it was excluded from the meeting with the President of the Republic, despite its request to participate in the discussion on the project’s environmental impact.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, Eleni Chaili, spokesperson for the Initiative Group to Save Mazotos Beach, stated that the Initiative Group had requested a meeting with the President of the Republic to discuss concerns regarding the project.
The meeting with the President of the Republic took place yesterday; however, as Ms. Chaili noted, only the Community Council was invited to attend.
“We weren’t invited to the meeting, even though we should have been there too,” she noted.
According to Ms. Haili’s statements, the Initiative Group has not yet received a briefing from the Community Council on what was discussed at the meeting; however, she emphasized that the Group has repeatedly informed the Community Council that they do not want the project to proceed, as they believe it will have negative environmental impacts.
“The Community Council itself ignored the Group, and the government ignored the Group, yet they say they will stand by the community and give us whatever we want. We don’t want anything.”
