The arrest of a 37-year-old man, against whom an arrest warrant was pending in connection with an ongoing investigation into a vehicle theft, was carried out early this morning by police officers in Paphos.
Specifically, shortly after 2:00 a.m., police officers located a parked car in an open parking lot in the community of Talas, a car that had been reported stolen yesterday morning.
At the same time, another car approached the area, and the driver was signaled to pull over for a check. The driver, who was identified as a 37-year-old man, failed to comply and sped away, attempting to flee.
At some point, the 37-year-old abandoned the car and tried to flee on foot, but was arrested by police officers. Warning shots were fired during the attempt to stop the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that the 37-year-old was driving the vehicle without a valid registration and without insurance coverage. He underwent a preliminary breathalyzer test, which showed a positive result of 69 μg; however, during the final test, he failed to provide a satisfactory breath sample.
Among other things, the following offenses are under investigation: vehicle theft, failure to comply with a police officer’s signal, reckless and dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as driving without a driver’s license and without insurance coverage. The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department, in cooperation with the Paphos Traffic Police, is continuing its investigation.
