Allegations that a 10-year-old girl at an elementary school in Nicosia had been repeatedly beaten by a group of her peers sparked political reactions, which left her injured and required hospitalization.

The Democratic Alarm expresses deep concern over incidents of violence among students and raises serious questions about the safety of children in schools.
“Recently, reports of incidents of violence among students have been documented and brought to public attention, causing deep concern. Particularly alarming is the recent report of an attack on a 10-year-old girl at an elementary school in Nicosia. These incidents raise serious questions about the effectiveness of mechanisms for preventing and addressing school violence, as well as the adequacy of measures to protect students. We call on the Ministry of Education to ensure a thorough investigation of the latest incident and to provide information on the measures being taken, both for the prevention and the timely response to such incidents. No child should feel afraid or unsafe at school. The protection of our children is non-negotiable.”

ELAM alleges that the perpetrators of the 10-year-old’s beating are foreign students and maintains that “Unfortunately, these tragic events are yet another striking example of the consequences of illegal immigration and confirm our long-standing warnings.”
“The consequences of illegal immigration in schools are evident. Their culture threatens our own. They cannot integrate into our society. Such acts must not be tolerated by anyone. This is about our children and their safety. We demand that the authorities take all necessary steps to fully investigate this tragic incident. Zero tolerance for violence against minors. Put a definitive end to illegal immigration. We’ve already waited too long.”
