Undoubtedly, puppets and theatrical marionettes are among the oldest and most enchanting forms of theatrical expression. The newly established Cyprus Academy of Puppetry and Pantomime aims to fill a significant gap in the theatrical culture of children’s theater in Cyprus, aiming to offer family-friendly puppet theater performances that broaden horizons, impart knowledge, and nurture emotions. In addition to its performances, the goal of CAPA (Cyprus Academy of Puppetry Arts) is, through workshops and creative programs, to restore the value of handmade craftsmanship by offering young and old alike the opportunity to cultivate their creativity, imagination, and social skills.
The play “The Cave of Ambrosia,” directed by Orestis Sophocleous, which is CAPA’s first production (opening November 22), presents a story inspired by actress Iliana Chalkia, with strong ecological and deeply humanistic messages. Hope, courage, and friendship become the force that can save the world. It is a tender and educational anti-war story with a special emphasis on environmental protection, which speaks to children about peace, harmonious coexistence, and the value of all forms of life. The handmade puppets, the sets, the music, the lighting, and the actors—who are trained in this genre—create a complete theatrical experience and invite children into a multidimensional, imaginative world.
In an era when electronic devices have become an integral part of a child’s daily life—and in many cases an extension of their own hands— greatly limiting their social interaction as well as their ability to cultivate their imagination, puppet theater—along with related workshops— children come into direct contact with multifaceted worlds, acquiring knowledge and skills.
A Few Words About the Play
Four friends, four young animals—a little bear, a little wolf, a little mouse, and a little rabbit—live in harmony, embracing each other’s differences. When a devastating war threatens to wipe out all life on the planet once and for all, leaving behind immeasurable destruction and the extinction of the bees, the four friends spring into action. They soon realize that without the bees, the balance of the entire ecosystem is threatened, and they set a grand goal: to bring them back and, with them, breathe life back into the Earth. Their weapons are hope, love, and friendship.
