The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, announced significant investments in infrastructure and urban renewal projects, both in the Paphos district and throughout Cyprus, referring to projects with a total value of 3.5 billion euros in Cyprus, the implementation of which will begin on January 1, 2028.

In his remarks at the event marking the completion of the project to upgrade the square and the historic center of Koili, which he officially inaugurated on Thursday afternoon, President Christodoulides noted that the project in Geroskipou, with a total value of 3.4 million euros, has been completed, while at the same time significant urban development projects are moving forward in other areas of the Paphos district, such as Kouklia, Pegeia, and Latsi.

According to him, the planned projects in the Paphos district represent investments totaling approximately 75 million euros.

Referring to the government’s broader development plan, he said that projects with a total value of 3.5 billion euros are expected to be approved by September 2027, with implementation set to begin on January 1, 2028.

As he explained, of the total amount, 2.5 billion euros will come from European funds and 1 billion euros from national funds.

President Christodoulides emphasized the need for timely preparation and development of the projects, calling on all relevant agencies to collaborate with the District Local Government Organization and the District Administration, so that as many comprehensive proposals as possible can be submitted and immediately moved forward for implementation.

At the same time, he noted that the government’s goal is economic development and that available European and national funds should translate into tangible results for citizens through modern infrastructure, upgraded public spaces, and a better quality of life.

Referring specifically to the Koili project, the President of the Republic congratulated all those who contributed to its completion, expressing his confidence that the revitalized square and the traditional town center “will serve as a vibrant gathering place for residents, families, and younger generations, preserving the community’s unique character and strengthening the bonds among its people.”

The President of the Republic reiterated that the government is moving forward with a concrete plan, cooperation, and collective effort, with the primary goal of implementing projects that will contribute to the country’s development and improve the daily lives of all citizens.

The President described the project, with a total cost of approximately 1.6 million euros, as a prime example of what can be achieved when the state collaborates with local government and European institutions, with the shared goal of developing the Cypriot countryside.

As he noted, the project began in September 2023 and was completed in November 2024, in record time. European and national funds were utilized for its implementation, and the contribution of the Paphos District Administration was also crucial.

The redevelopment covers the community’s main streets, spanning approximately 850 meters, featuring traditional cobblestone paving and provisions to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities.

At the same time, the stormwater drainage system was upgraded, utility networks were buried underground, and landscaping work was carried out. The installation of flower beds, benches, and other urban furnishings creates a more welcoming and functional environment for residents and visitors.

The President of the Republic emphasized that the significance of the project is not limited to the aesthetic enhancement of the area, but extends to the creation of a space for gathering and social interaction, which strengthens community life and the bonds among residents.

“Our goal is to create better living conditions, to enhance the appeal of our communities, and to empower people to stay in their hometowns, to build and plan their future with optimism,” he said.

The President also made special mention of other development projects in Koili, noting that the regional center has already been completed, another significant government investment totaling approximately 8 million euros.

Referring to the broader development plan for the Paphos district and the free areas, he recalled that during the meeting with local stakeholders in Paphos, in September 2025, a wide range of initiatives was presented, comprising more than 75 projects with a total budget exceeding 230 million euros.

The projects, he noted, address critical needs in the areas of infrastructure, road safety, sustainable mobility, the environment, and local development.

“Our goal is to revitalize these beautiful regions, our mountain communities, and their traditional centers, with the aim of creating sustainable and functional spaces,” said the President of the Republic.

In his own remarks at the opening ceremony, the president of the Koili Community Council, Michalakis Efthymios, noted that a new chapter for Koili is beginning with the completion of the project to beautify and revitalize its traditional center.

The project, with a total budget of €1.2 million, has already transformed the community’s appearance, enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the village center and highlighting its traditional character.

According to Mr. Efthymios, beyond the aesthetic improvements, the revitalization appears to be creating new opportunities for Koili’s economic and tourism development. Already, he said, there is increased interest in investments in the area, focused on the creation of taverns, cafes, and shops.

This development, he noted, raises hopes for strengthening local entrepreneurship, attracting visitors, and creating new activities, while also contributing to efforts to combat urban decay and sustain community life.
