The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Olguín, set a deadline of tomorrow, Friday, to both sides in Cyprus to respond to a package of confidence-building measures, which includes four new crossing points and demining, according to the Turkish news agency ANKA.
Diplomatic sources told the agency that the two sides have come close to an agreement on the roadblocks, but continue to disagree on the scope of the demining efforts.
The package includes the crossing points at Mia Milia, Athienou–Pyroi–Aglantzia, Louroutzina–Lympia, and Kampos–Karavostasi, as an alternative route to Kokkina.
It also provides for the demining of 70,000 square meters on each side. According to the same sources, the Greek Cypriot side views the proposal favorably, while the Turkish Cypriot side is calling for a more extensive demining effort.
If an agreement is reached, a meeting between the two leaders and UN Secretary-General António Guterres may take place in a 2+1 format, and, if progress is made, an expanded 5+1 meeting could follow.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is traveling to the occupied territories tomorrow for an unauthorized working visit, where he will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, “Prime Minister” Unal Ustel, and “Foreign Minister” Tahsin Ertugruloglu.
ANKA also reports that Ms. Olgin had another meeting with Tufan Erhürman on November 4, during which they discussed the methodology ahead of the planned meeting between the two leaders on November 9.
