Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou struck a reassuring tone regarding Iranian reports claiming that British bases in Cyprus are potential targets for attacks, calling on citizens to remain calm and carefully evaluate the information being reported in the media.
Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, Mr. Antoniou emphasized that special care is needed in handling such information, noting that alarmist reports should not be allowed to create a climate of anxiety.
As he assured, the Republic of Cyprus is in contact with the Iranian government, and should the need arise to take measures or inform the public, the government and the relevant agencies will issue the necessary announcements.
“People should not worry. Whatever needs to be done to mobilize them, we will do it,” was his message, referring also to how the government handled the situation last March, when it provided official and continuous updates to the public.
Relations with Iran and Pezeskian’s Statement
When asked to comment on the statement by Iranian President Masoud Pezeskian that bilateral relations between Cyprus and Iran are not at the level Tehran would like, Yiannis Antoniou stated that the Republic of Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union, adheres to the decisions taken collectively by the 27 member states.
At the same time, he noted that relations between Cyprus and Iran have historically been excellent, adding that there is communication at the level of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, with the aim of resolving all issues that need to be addressed.
What About Britain and the Bases?
Regarding communication between Nicosia and London, the Deputy Government Spokesperson stated that the UK assures that the British bases in Cyprus are not being used for military operations.
He clarified, however, that the Republic of Cyprus does not have the ability to physically control the bases, while also noting that maintaining diplomatic relations and communication with Iran is a particularly important factor.
A review of the status of the Bases is on the table
Regarding the possibility of reviewing the status of the British bases, Yiannis Antoniou stated that a dialogue with the United Kingdom is currently underway.
He acknowledged, however, that the change in government in the United Kingdom has delayed the timeline for these plans, noting that the issue is not currently a priority for the government. He made it clear, however, that the intention to review the status of the bases remains.
