The post-Cristiano Ronaldo era has begun for Portugal, with Jorge Jesus announcing his first call-ups, in the wake of the 41-year-old superstar’s “farewell,” for the final two matches in League A of the Nations League against Denmark (Nov. 14, 9:45 p.m.) and Wales (Nov. 17, 9:45 p.m.).
The 72-year-old coach called up all of the country’s top stars, as well as Gustavo Varela, the son of Fernando, the former captain and center back of PAOK. The 21-year-old Varela, who previously played for PAOK’s U-19 team, is having an outstanding season with Monza, playing as a forward and scoring 11 goals in 10 appearances.
