Donald Trump announced the first major change to his inner circle following the Republicans’ defeat in the midterm elections, removing Suzy Wiles from her position as White House chief of staff.
Effective Monday, November 9, her position will be taken over by the current deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, one of the U.S. president’s closest and most trusted aides. Wiles will move to Trump’s political team.
In a post on Truth Social, the U.S. president praised the outgoing chief of staff’s work, thanking her for her service, while describing Miller as one of his most trusted advisers.
For her part, Wiles described her service at the White House as the “greatest honor” of her life. In a post on Platform X, she stated that she is proud of the administration’s accomplishments, emphasizing that, despite her change in role, her commitment to the president and his mission will remain unchanged.
According to ERT’s Washington correspondent, Lena Argyris, Wiles submitted her resignation to Trump late Thursday night. Her departure comes at a time when there are growing signs of broader changes in the administration, following three previous resignations at the Department of Justice.
Who is Stephen Miller, the new chief of staff?
Steven Miller, 41, is one of the most influential figures in Donald Trump’s inner circle and is directly linked to the administration’s hardline immigration policy. He is considered the chief architect of the measures against illegal immigration, which lie at the heart of the Republican president’s political agenda.
He joined Trump’s team during the 2016 election campaign as a speechwriter and has since become one of his closest associates. During Trump’s second presidential term, he served as deputy chief of staff and homeland security advisor, assuming a broad range of responsibilities.
Miller has consistently supported Trump’s strict immigration policies, while his public statements and interventions have sparked controversy. During the U.S. president’s first term, he played a central role in shaping entry restrictions into the U.S. for nationals of Muslim-majority countries.
During his second term, according to media reports, he played a decisive role in intensifying the operations of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, calling for an increase in deportations. This policy sparked strong backlash, including in California, where the deployment of federal forces triggered clashes.
Wiles and the Internal Turmoil Within the Republican Party
Susie Wiles was the first woman to serve as White House Chief of Staff and had a long history working alongside Trump. She worked with him since the 2016 election campaign and played a significant role in the 2020 and 2024 campaigns as well.
She was credited with playing a decisive role in improving the organization of his most recent campaign, and had earned a reputation as a close associate who brought greater discipline to the way the presidential staff operated.
Her dismissal comes at a time of intense internal turmoil within the Republican Party and the White House. At the same time, pressure is mounting for changes at the Department of Defense, with Secretary Pete Hegesez at the center of criticism, despite the public support Trump continues to give him.
Top military commanders are also in the crosshairs, including Admiral Brad Cooper and General Dan Kane, over the handling of operations in Iran.
At the same time, mutual accusations within the presidential staff are intensifying, with Wiles and her colleague James Blair facing criticism for the election strategy pursued by the Republicans.
