Armed with the “formula” that has provided them with key solutions recently, PAOK is preparing to take the field in tomorrow’s derby against Olympiacos at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, for Matchday 10 of the Stoiximan Super League.
Alessio Lisi appears to be settling on a 4-4-2 formation, a system they’ve been working on the most recently and with which the “black-and-whites” have shown improvement, combining strong performances with positive results.
The turning point for the Italian coach was the 3-1 victory over AEK at Toumba in the Cup. Aside from the victory’s significance in terms of points and morale, that game also largely demonstrated the direction PAOK intends to take on the field.
A central part of the plan is the partnership between Simon Banza and Serif Ndiaye at the top of the attack. The two forwards have shown that they can work together, providing different options in the attacking game and a greater presence in and around the opponent’s box.
The use of two pure strikers has now firmly become part of Lisi’s game plan, as this solution provides PAOK with elements it was previously lacking. Banza and Diaye can work together, but they also possess the quality to create opportunities through their individual plays.
The choice of a 4-4-2 formation, however, isn’t just about the two forwards. It’s a formation that affects PAOK’s overall style of play, from defensive organization and the midfield to build-up play and the balance between the lines.
Lissi wants to maintain what has been working well recently and avoid changes that might upset the team’s balance. That’s why the 4-4-2 formation is currently the most likely option for the derby in Faliro.
