George Pamporidis outlined his position ahead of the Democratic Alarm’s internal party elections to select the party’s nominee for President of the Republic while speaking on the program “25 Minutes” and my colleague Iakovos Iakovou.
He criticized Averof Neophytou for the way he sought the nomination within the party, the party leadership’s handling of the situation, as well as the conditions under which he would not support Averof Neophytou.
He notably pointed out that the DISY leadership had, as he put it, “given away” the nomination to his opponent.
“If I, my dear Iakovos, were to announce my candidacy on my own, outside party procedures—as Mr. Averof Neophytou did—within 24, or at most 48, hours, my head would be on a platter, and I would be expelled from the Democratic Alarm.”
George Pamporidis
He emphasized that his mere participation in an internal party process requires him to accept the terms and rules of the game, in order to declare his support for Averof Neophytou should he receive the nomination.
“It would be politically unethical if, after participating in a process and losing, I were to sulk and act like a spoiled child, saying, ‘Oh, but why did I lose?’”
Giorgos Pamporidis, however, also laid out the conditions under which he would not support his opponent.
“But if tomorrow morning, during his campaign, Averof Neophytou adopts the view that the National Health System should be abolished, I assure you that I won’t be there to support it by any means.”
AKEL’s Stance
AKEL’s goal of progressive change in the 2028 presidential elections was referenced by the party’s General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, speaking at the 28th AKEL Larnaca District Conference.
The party’s central goal, he said, is to halt the country’s downward spiral, pointing to the responsibilities of the Anastasiades – Synagermou, and Christodoulides, which, according to him, have led to the current social impasses.
“AKEL is not only the organization that awakened people’s consciences, organized them, and mobilized them to achieve the ambitious, progressive goals that moved the world and our country forward. AKEL is also a force for creation. Through our resistance and our struggles, we have succeeded in transforming our party—in its 100 years of existence—into a force for progress that builds.”
Stefanos Stefanou
At today’s AKEL Larnaca conference, Christos Kkones was elected as the new district secretary.
