George Kyriakou, President of the Association of Licensed Electrical Contractors of Cyprus, has made serious allegations against an EAC inspector who is introducing unsuitableelectrical equipment, which he then sells to electricians.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, Mr. Kyriakou noted that the Association has had information for years that a certain EAC inspector has been importing electrical equipment.
The Electricity Authority is conducting an investigation into this specific matter, according to Mr. Kyriakou.
“We found some evidence suggesting that this company, which was operating improperly, —whether due to its electrical equipment not having CE certification, time-related issues, or risks of electric shock or fire—is linked to a specific inspector,”
They subsequently appealed to the EAC to conduct an investigation in June, with the Authority informing them in early July that an investigation was underway, and shortly before August, Mr. Kyriakou went to file a report, submitting the evidence he had at his disposal.
At the same time, he urged them to contact individuals in the electrical and mechanical engineering department who had assisted in the investigation conducted jointly with the Association; however, they have not yet been summoned.
“Our homes are full of substandard electrical equipment. And even with these, 90% of them will still be there. It’s impossible that all the substandard products have been removed from every home in this specific case.”
At the same time, there is a second complaint regarding an inspector, as Mr. Kyriakou notes.
This concerns an inspector in Paphos who, according to the company that filed the complaint with the Association, has been facing competition in recent years from a rival who is an inspector with the EAC.
“A complaint was filed against another inspector, alleging that he is taking their business away.”
The company, as Mr. Kyriakou noted, is registered under the inspector’s father-in-law; however, despite the electricians’ willingness to provide photographic evidence and testify, the Authority has not summoned them.
A “Warning” About Heat Storage Tanks
Mr. Kyriakou warned consumers about the end of price regulation for heat storage units.
He warned that the price increase would be 50%.
“Find another way to heat your home; don’t turn on your storage heaters now in the winter, or the bill will come and you’ll be in for a shock.”
