“There is no political will”: No timeline for the return of livestock farmers after the foot-and-mouth outbreak

Foot-and-mouth disease and rising costs are “strangling” livestock farmers
ALPHANEWSLIVE

It remains unclear when the livestock farms affected by foot-and-mouth disease will resume operations.

In the Finance Committee, where the Ministry of Agriculture’s budget for 2027 was discussed, officials were repeatedly asked to provide a specific timeline, with the Director of Veterinary Services limiting himself to stating that the process is in its final stage.

“It is also influenced by the status of livestock farms in the vicinity of these specific facilities and by the stage they are at regarding their disinfection, along with manure removal and the destruction of animal feed.”
Christodoulos Pipis – Director of Veterinary Services

As the Minister of Agriculture confirmed, there is currently no active virus, and sampling continues on a daily basis.

Support for the Primary Sector

Support for the livestock sector following the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, as well as broader support for the primary sector, are high on the Ministry’s list of priorities for 2027.

Members of Parliament called for substantive measures to address rising production costs.

In this context, and amid the pressures caused by the climate crisis and the prolonged drought, the Ministry is allocating 43% of its budget to water supply and irrigation, with the implementation of at least 65 projects by 2027, for water procurement, development projects, and the operation and maintenance of water infrastructure.
