Defeat for Aleksandar Vučić and the ruling party in Serbia’s parliamentary elections

Incidents, attacks, and allegations marred the election process

Defeat for Aleksandar Vučić and the ruling party in today’s parliamentary elections held in Serbia. Vučić conceded defeat to the Student List, the movement that emerged from the anti-government protests of recent years.

“We don’t have final results yet, but based on an exit poll (…) it’s clear that we lost these elections; the Student List has won; they will have between 135 and 140 seats, and we will have 105; no one else will be elected to parliament,” said Vučić.

The electoral process was not without problems. Organizations that monitored the election process reported irregularities, mainly involving vote-buying, duplicate voter rolls, and attacks on voters. A serious incident occurred in the city of Pančevo. Specifically, outside a polling station located at the city’s Agricultural School, a group of hooded individuals physically assaulted young men who were waiting to vote. Videos circulating on social media show at least one young man with a bloodied face. Police rushed to the scene to investigate, and medical assistance was provided to the injured. A video also circulated online showing a group of hundreds of hooded youths dressed in black moving along a central avenue in Belgrade.

At the same time, there was a heavy security presence on the streets of the capital. Specifically, at noon today in downtown Belgrade, numerous vehicles belonging to the riot police were spotted. Earlier in the day, on the Belgrade–Niš highway, a convoy of about 20 heavy police vehicles was spotted heading toward Belgrade.

These specific vehicles, which took to the streets of Belgrade today, had first appeared during the summer protests of 2025 in Novi Sad, when they were used by police forces to disperse protesters from boulevards and major thoroughfares.
