Albania in chaos: Clashes and street fights between protesters and law enforcement (VIDEO)

Rama is hardening his stance; the opposition has accused him of “declaring a dictatorship”

The student protest in Tirana on Sunday began with stones being thrown at the Ministry of Education building. With a heavy police presence on all the streets of the capital, when the first student protesters arrived outside the Prime Minister’s office, they gave their own response to the symbolic call for dialogue issued that morning by Edi Rama, who continues to insist on the invitation. After destroying the wooden chairs, they set them on fire and burned them along with the dialogue documents. Some resourceful protesters chose to dress up as cartoon characters today.

However, today’s announcements by the Prime Minister—who is further hardening his stance toward the protesters—have sparked a political clash between Rama and the opposition.

Eddie Rama, after expressing confidence that “the flames of this unnatural destruction will be extinguished,” as he described the situation in Tirana, went on to outline the legal package of measures—drafted by his government—to combat violence and anarchy. In fact, he emphasized that every proposed measure is in accordance with the Albanian Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. Among the six measures in the package are heavy fines for those who participate in acts of violence and destruction, amendments to the Law on Assemblies, an electronic registry for those involved in criminal offenses against the state and public safety, as well as sanctions against educators who organize or coordinate the participation of students under the age of 18 in assemblies contrary to the best interests of the children.

The opposition Democratic Party has labeled Rama’s package unconstitutional and his announcement a “declaration of dictatorship.” The first reaction came from Gazmed Bardi, head of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, who stated in a post, among other things: “What you saw today is the real Edi Rama, a thieving dictator, ready to inflict the greatest harm on the country to hold onto his seat…. The countdown has begun…”

Sali Berisha then stated that the package announced by Edi Rama would not be able to stop the protests. At the same time, he criticized the use of rubber bullets and once again called on Rama to resign.
