Human remains belonging to a man whose identity has not yet been confirmed were discovered yesterday in the Rhine River in the Swiss canton of Aargau, near the border with Germany, local police announced, adding that they are treating the case as a homicide.
Three men who were on the riverbank yesterday morning in Stein, a town located about 30 minutes from Basel, noticed a backpack in the water.
When they managed to retrieve it, they discovered a human foot inside, according to a press release issued by the cantonal police.
During the search conducted yesterday, with the assistance of a boat and divers, “other backpacks containing human remains” belonging to a man were found.
The Aargau Forensic Service is conducting examinations to determine the circumstances of death and identify the victim.
“However, everything indicates that he was the victim of a violent crime,” the police said, adding that they do not yet have detailed information regarding the circumstances, the location where the crime was committed, or the perpetrator.
The police are appealing for witnesses and are looking for anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity on the banks of the Rhine or elsewhere.
The prosecutor’s office has launched a criminal investigation.
