From artificial intelligence and software to healthcare and management

The job market is changing rapidly as artificial intelligence, digitization, an aging population, cybersecurity, and growing needs in the healthcare sector create new employment opportunities.

The latest projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for the period 2025–2035 identify some of the occupations expected to see significant employment growth.

Although the data pertain to the U.S. labor market, several of the trends they reflect are global in nature and can serve as an indicator of where overall demand for skilled workers is headed.

According to Business Insider, the analysis is based on occupations with annual earnings of at least 75,000 in the U.S. and ranks them based on a combination of high earnings and projected job growth.

20. Human Resources Specialists

Human resources specialists are expected to add approximately 60,100 jobs by 2035.

The growing importance of talent management, employee training, and helping businesses adapt to new forms of work is driving demand in this field.

19. Industrial Engineers

With a median annual salary of $102,440 (approximately 87,070 euros) and about 45,400 new jobs, industrial engineers remain vital to manufacturing.

Automation, robotics, production optimization, and the need for more efficient supply chains are driving demand for professionals who can combine technology with operational efficiency.

18. Physician Assistants

Physician assistants are also among the highest-paying professions, with a median salary of $135,880 (approximately 115,500 euros). An increase of approximately 35,700 jobs is projected, and a graduate degree is typically required.

The need for more healthcare services is a global trend, particularly as life expectancy and the number of older adults increase.

17. Marketing Directors

Marketing managers have a median annual salary of $166,790 (approximately 141,770 euros), and about 29,100 additional jobs are projected.

The shift to digital marketing, consumer data analysis, and the use of artificial intelligence are transforming the role, which is now much more closely tied to technology and data analysis.

16. Market Analysts and Marketing Specialists

With 66,300 new jobs, market analysts are another profession benefiting from the data economy.

Companies increasingly need professionals who can translate information about consumers and markets into business decisions.

15. Information Security Analysts

Cybersecurity is becoming a strategic priority for businesses and governments around the world.

Information security analysts have a median salary of $129,180 (approximately €109,800), and about 40,600 new jobs are projected to be created. The rise in cyberattacks, the shift to the cloud, and the need to protect critical data make this field particularly important globally.

14. Health Care Educators

This category includes educators who prepare future professionals in the health fields, with approximately 49,900 new jobs projected.

The need for more doctors, nurses, and other health professionals also creates a need for teaching staff.

13. Construction Managers

Construction managers have a median salary of $114,990 (approximately 97,740 euros), and 55,200 new jobs are projected.

Major investments in infrastructure, housing, energy, and urban renewal in many parts of the world are underscoring the importance of this profession.

12. Lawyers

Lawyers remain among the highest-paid professionals, with a projected increase of 40,600 jobs.

In fact, advances in technology are creating new areas of specialization, ranging from artificial intelligence law and data protection to cybersecurity and international business law.

11. Accountants and Auditors

Approximately 79,400 new jobs are projected for accountants and auditors, with a median salary of $83,680 (approximately 71,130 euros).

Despite the automation of many accounting tasks, the need for tax compliance, financial auditing, and reliable corporate reporting remains strong.

10. Project Management Specialists

Project managers are expected to see an increase of 73,200 jobs, with a median salary of $102,320 (approximately 86,970 euros).

From technology and construction to energy and services, organizations need professionals who can coordinate complex projects, budgets, and teams.

9. Management Analysts

With approximately 109,200 new jobs and a median salary of $101,860 (approximately 86,580 euros), management analysts rank at the top of professions that combine business knowledge and analysis.

The need for businesses to reduce costs, improve processes, and adapt to new market conditions creates additional opportunities.

8. Data Scientists

Data science lies at the heart of the digital economy.

The development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and applications based on big data is expected to keep demand high.

7. Chief Financial Officers

Chief financial officers have a median salary of $166,570 (approximately €141,580), and 84,900 new positions are projected.

Their role is expanding as companies face greater financial complexity, international markets, and increased demands for risk management.

6. Specialized Nurses

Healthcare is one of the biggest “stars” of the forecasts. Specialized nurses have a median salary of $132,300 (approximately 112,450 euros), and approximately 137,800 new positions are expected to be created.

The aging global population and the growing demand for healthcare services make nursing one of the professions with particularly strong prospects.

5. IT and Information Systems Managers

With a projected increase of 108,100 jobs, IT managers rank among the top five.

Companies are investing in the cloud, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure, increasing the need for executives who can align technology with a company’s strategy.

4. Registered Nurses

Registered nurses are expected to see some of the largest employment gains, with approximately 194,700 new jobs by 2035.

This trend is not limited to the U.S.: healthcare workforce shortages and an aging population pose challenges for healthcare systems in many countries.

3. General and Operations Managers

Approximately 181,300 new positions are projected for general and operational services managers. The complexity of modern organizations increases the need for executives who can coordinate people, resources, processes, and operational functions.

2. Medical and Health Services Managers

The second spot goes to health services managers, with a projected increase of 155,100 positions and a median salary of $123,860 (approximately 105,280 euros).

As healthcare systems grow and become more complex, so does the need for professionals who can manage hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare organizations.

1. Software Developers

At the top of the list are software developers. Employment in this field is projected to increase by approximately 174,700 jobs by 2035, while the median annual salary in the U.S. is $135,980 (approximately 115,580 euros).

This position reflects the profound transformation of the global economy. From apps and the cloud to artificial intelligence, robotics, financial services, and the automotive industry, nearly every sector now depends on software.

The three major trends shaping the next decade

Although the figures come from the U.S. and cannot be directly applied to Europe, Asia, or other markets, the broader trends are highly indicative.

First is technology: Programmers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, and IT professionals are expected to remain in high demand as artificial intelligence and digitization expand into nearly every industry.

Second is healthcare: An aging population and increasing healthcare needs are driving demand for both clinical staff and healthcare administration and education professionals.

Third is the need for specialized management: Businesses are becoming increasingly complex and require people who can manage projects, finances, human resources, and operational functions.

Employees who combine technical knowledge with analytical thinking, managerial skills, and the ability to adapt to new technologies are likely to have a significant advantage in the job market of the next decade.
