The Averof-Pheidias Connection

From personal contacts to joint statements on the Cyprus issue and the agreement to support Anita Dimitriou for Speaker of the House

From personal contacts to shared positions on the Cyprus issue and the agreement to support Anita Dimitriou for Speaker of the House

It is no longer just a casual political acquaintance. The relationship between Averof Neophytou and Phidias Panayiotou has taken on a public dimension, and as the political debate for 2028 draws nearer, it is attracting more and more interest.

Pheidias Panayiotou himself has spoken publicly about a “very good relationship” with the former DISY president, explaining that he often contacts him and seeks his advice, given the former DISY president’s many years of political experience.

In fact, according to reports, he calls him “grandpa.”

In August, the two men appeared together on a podcast hosted by Pheidias, in a discussion that touched on the Cyprus issue, the political situation, and developments within DISY. In fact, Averof appears to be the mediator who secured Pheidias’s support for Anita to remain Speaker of the House.

The situation becomes even more intriguing when the two appear to be taking a similar stance on the Cyprus issue.

In recent days, both Pheidias—immediately following the National Council meeting—and Averof Neophytou have highlighted the lack of progress on the Cyprus issue. Their public statements showed clear convergence on the need to restart the process and on criticism of the President of the Republic’s handling of the matter to date.

It’s Not Just the Cyprus Issue

Political interest, however, extends beyond these specific statements. Fidias Panayiotou took a frank and strong stance against the government’s approach to electricity prices, citing former Energy Minister George Papanastasiou.

Will this “flirtation” turn into a “marriage”?

The 2028 presidential election is, in effect, creating a new political landscape. Averof Neophytou has now declared his intention to run for president, while Phidias Panayiotou is playing a different political role in the capital of Europe, making frequent appearances. At the same time, procedures are moving forward within DISY.

How much might the relationship between Averof and Phaedias influence the new political landscape? Will they form an alliance for 2028? Will Volt be part of this alliance? Will Odysseas Michaelides follow suit? Perhaps even a current coalition party? Will Annita Dimitriou’s interest remain on the table until the very end?
