The Assistant Auditor responds to Odysseas: “It’s ironic to criticize a situation that he himself created.”

The former auditor said of mr. Kyriakou that “he is paid 100,000 euros a year and has no duties.”

"I consistently carry out all the duties assigned to me," Assistant Auditor General Kyriakos Kyriakou states in a written statement, adding that it is ironic for the former Auditor General to criticize as a problem a situation “which he himself created.”

In a written statement, prompted by remarks made by the current and former Auditors General during the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance on October 30, 2026, as reported by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Mr. Kyriakou states that it is necessary to put the facts into their proper perspective.

Specifically, Mr. Michaelides questioned during the discussion why there is a need for a Director position when there is already an Assistant Auditor General “who is paid 100,000 euros a year and has no duties.”

“I categorically state that I consistently carry out all the duties assigned to me. Any claim or insinuation that I do not wish to work or that I am responsible for my limited utilization is completely unfounded,” stated Mr. Kyriakou

On the contrary, he adds, he has repeatedly requested—initially verbally and subsequently in writing—that he be assigned more and more substantial duties, and that he has not received any response to his letter to date.

Mr. Kyriakou points out that the Constitution provides for the participation of the Assistant Auditor General in the work of the Audit Office, without fully specifying his individual duties. In the absence of specific legislation governing the operation of the Service, the determination of the specific duties of the Assistant Auditor General rests with the current Auditor General, within the framework established by the Constitution, it states.

“Consequently, the responsibility for the limited utilization of the Assistant Auditor General cannot be shifted onto him, especially since he has repeatedly requested to take on more duties,” he continues.

The current situation, he notes, did not arise by chance.

He explains that “it was created during the tenure of the former Auditor General, who stripped me of the duties I had performed prior to his appointment and excluded me from nearly all of the Audit Office’s work. This demotion was accompanied, among other things, by restrictions on my access to official files, exclusion from official meetings, and a refusal to apply the constitutional provisions regarding the replacement of the Auditor General.”

Regarding this situation, Mr. Kyriakou adds, “and the serious risks it posed to the proper functioning of the Audit Office and the upholding of the constitutional order, I had repeatedly warned the relevant institutions in writing, requesting that measures be taken. However, there was no substantive response.”

It is, therefore, he states, “at the very least ironic that the former Auditor General should now appear to criticize as a problem a situation that he himself created and perpetuated for a number of years.”

“I refuse to allow my reputation to be tarnished over a situation that I did not create, which I have repeatedly denounced, and for the resolution of which I continue to call for specific actions,” he concludes.
