The deep wound in DISY and its ramifications

The loss of composure, the complaints, and the concerns of executives over yet another defeat
ALPHANEWSLIVE

It is becoming increasingly clear every day that the country’s political life has changed in tone, ethos, and substance. And given the way things are unfolding, we may find ourselves in a very reshaped political landscape in the aftermath of the elections.

On one side, we see the behind-the-scenes rivalry between Nikolas Papadopoulos and the Presidential Office, the outcome of which remains uncertain until 2028.

And on the other, the unprecedented crisis facing DISY.

In DISY, we are no longer talking about a split but about the possibility of a three-way split. The crisis within DISY is now deeply existential. While we had Annita Dimitriou’s announcement regarding the nomination yesterday, it went almost unnoticed. Not because it lacked political significance, but because of the prevailing atmosphere, which is causing a lack of composure. DISY will now have to address two issues. The first is the electoral process; although having the candidate elected by party members is considered particularly democratic, there may be backlash against the rushed process currently being attempted. Because it prevents others from running.

The second major issue is whether Averof Neophytou will run as a party candidate or as an independent.

He has criticized the DISY for its lack of opposition rhetoric, notably stating that Nikolas Papadopoulos is more of an opponent to Nicos Christodoulides. He also made pointed remarks about betrayal, indicating that he does not trust the process that will be followed within the party. This is very likely linked to his feeling that front-line party officials will not support his candidacy.

However, a candidacy outside the established procedures would render him inconsistent. Not only because he was the president of DISY for ten years, but also because it essentially legitimizes what Nikos Christodoulides did—and what he himself had condemned.

However, the events unfolding go beyond DISY. They raise questions of integrity and bring specific matters of principle to light.

And this isn’t just about whether a deal was struck—or attempted—between Anita Dimitriou and Averof Neophytou. The lack of seriousness is evident in the fact that the political debate has degenerated and been reduced to what happened and what was said at a fish tavern. If political decisions are indeed made in this manner, then that speaks volumes about our level of maturity.

But there is also a matter of principle. What business do non-party members—businesspeople and others—have acting as fixers, discussing who can assume the highest political offices, or proposing solutions and attempting to dictate party decisions? That is precisely what needs to be answered.

Whatever comes to light does more than just cast a shadow on political life. It risks deepening the public’s distrust of the political system and its institutions.
