The Legal Service will not proceed with criminal charges against Nikos Sykas, as it states in a press release that there is insufficient evidence to bring the case before a court.

As noted, the decision was made due to the absence of the complainant’s testimony, which constitutes an essential part of the evidence, while it is emphasized that the presumption of innocence of the suspect is being upheld.

The statement reads as follows:

Guided by the State’s obligation to effectively investigate complaints regarding possible incidents of violence against women, this case was investigated by the competent authorities with the seriousness required by its nature. The investigation was conducted on the basis of the principle that the examination of cases of violence against women does not depend exclusively on the will or cooperation of the victim.

Upon completion of the investigation, all the evidence was carefully evaluated. At the same time, it was examined whether the case could proceed on the basis of the available evidence, regardless of the complainant’s position regarding the continuation of the proceedings. It was determined that, under the circumstances and in the absence of the complainant’s testimony—which constitutes an essential part of the evidence that could be evaluated before a court— there was insufficient evidence to proceed with criminal prosecution, while always respecting the presumption of innocence of the suspect. In this case, any other evidence obtained during the investigation was not deemed sufficient on its own to bring the case before a court.

Based on the foregoing, it was decided that the case would remain pending for a period of one year. The State remains available to provide the complainant with any necessary form of support and protection.
