“I was by her side from the very beginning until the end. It all happened so fast, honestly,” says the partner of 36-year-old Magda, who lost her battle for life during an airlift to Athens, following serious complications that arose a few days after the birth of her child at Mytilene Hospital.
Where smiles, first glances at the newborn, and dreams for the future should have reigned, an unspeakable tragedy came to turn everything upside down.
A man who was looking forward to building a new life with the woman he loved now finds himself facing a void that is difficult to describe.
“I can’t understand what happened and why it ended so tragically.”
“Everything happened so fast after the baby was born. There hadn’t been any problems before that. I can’t understand what happened and why it ended so tragically. From the very first moment until the end, I was by her side,” says the 36-year-old’s partner, unable to explain the unimaginable to friends and relatives who constantly ask him about the tragedy that struck his family.
Within a few days, hope turned to anguish, and anguish to deep mourning. Her partner watched the 36-year-old doctor fight for her life, hoping for a miracle at every moment. He stayed by her side, holding onto the belief that they would return home together to hold their child and begin a new chapter in their lives.

Today, he is called upon to come to terms with reality, to mourn the love of his life, and, at the same time, to find the strength to stand tall for their newborn child, whom she left behind.
How the tragedy unfolded
The unfortunate woman had given birth to a perfectly healthy baby last Friday, and, according to reports, her health suddenly deteriorated in the hours that followed.
On Saturday, she developed a high fever, and her attending physicians closely monitored her condition as they observed that her clinical picture was becoming increasingly alarming.
On Tuesday, it was deemed necessary to transfer her to a hospital in Athens; however, the young doctor did not make it to her destination, as she passed away during the airlift. The exact causes and circumstances leading to this tragic outcome are under investigation.
“She never got to enjoy her little one”
Her colleagues, who had been by her side the entire time, speak with emotion about a person who had dedicated her life to helping others.
“Her partner hasn’t left her side for a single moment. He’s devastated and is still trying to come to terms with what happened. On Friday, she gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby, and on Saturday the complications began. “She developed a fever, and after two days, she was intubated,” says a colleague of hers, describing the dramatic events that have unfolded over the past few days.
“On Tuesday, she was airlifted to Athens. By the time she arrived at a hospital in Athens, they had to resuscitate her, and then we learned that she had died. She didn’t get to enjoy her little one; she didn’t get to do anything—it all happened so fast. “There are so many questions surrounding her death that we, too, are searching for answers,” concludes a colleague of hers on protothema.gr.
They describe her as a doctor with a deep sense of responsibility and dedication to her work. “She was someone who always wanted to help others. Even when she was six months pregnant, we told her to be careful and not to get into ambulances. But she wanted to be right there with the patient, on the front lines,” they emphasize.
Her loss has plunged friends, relatives, and colleagues into grief; they speak of a young woman full of dreams, who combined her scientific training with compassion and dedication to the people she was tasked with caring for.
“We are devastated. There are many questions about exactly what happened. For us, however, above all else, we have lost an exceptional person and a beloved colleague,” conclude those who knew her well.
“We’re all crying”
At the same time, in a statement, POEDIN President Michalis Giannakos said:
“We are devastated. We have lost a 36-year-old colleague, a doctor with the Mytilene EKAB, following childbirth
We are devastated, shocked. We mourn the death of our 36-year-old colleague, a doctor with the Mytilene EKAB—the only one in the North Aegean. An exceptional colleague—helpful and always smiling—she remained on the front lines even while six months pregnant, often responding to and managing extremely critical cases.
She completed her residency in the emergency department at Mytilene Hospital and was hired a year ago by the Mytilene branch of EKAΒ. Her husband is also a doctor at Mytilene Hospital. On Friday, she was admitted to give birth and delivered a perfectly healthy baby girl, who is currently in the maternity ward. Her colleagues are caring for her as if she were their own child.
On Saturday, the 36-year-old developed a fever and was treated with medication. On Sunday, her condition worsened and she was admitted to the ICU. She was intubated, stabilized as much as possible, and it was decided to transfer her to ATTIKO HOSPITAL, which was on call that day and where, through coordination, an ICU bed had been secured.
The director of air ambulance services at EKAB oversaw her air transport. Unfortunately, she suffered cardiac arrest during the airlift, and the EKAB air ambulance team made heroic efforts to resuscitate her. Yesterday at 5:30 p.m., she was transported to the emergency room at Attiko Hospital in cardiac arrest, and despite the doctors’ best efforts, it was not possible to revive her. On Tuesday morning, she underwent surgery at the Mytilene Hospital, during which no retained placental tissue was found.
It is a tragedy that a young woman was lost following a normal delivery of her first child. The causes of our colleague’s death must certainly be investigated, and if any liability is found, it must be addressed. In any case, we are all deeply shaken. It turns out that no one is immune.
Our condolences go out to her family and all her colleagues in Mytilene. We are all in tears.”
