Cyprus Issue: The Outrage Over Olgin’s Statements, the MOEs, and Erhurman Aligning with Ankara’s Position

The government says that progress on confidence-building measures is welcome but not a prerequisite

“The path to a solution is a bizonal, bicommunal federation. We have said before that we are determined to support the Secretary-General in this effort, because that is exactly what we want.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

Konstantinos Letympiotis makes it clear that any negotiations cannot address the position expressed by the Turkish leadership regarding sovereign equality.

Speaking
on the “Alpha Summer” program, he also emphasizes that progress on confidence-building measures is welcome but should not be a precondition.

“And on its own, progress on Confidence-Building Measures will not be enough to convene a successful expanded conference.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

When asked whether there is an issue regarding Maria Olgin’s credibility, the government is officially keeping a tight lid on the matter.

However, off the record—and as evidenced by media reports—it is clear that there is irritation over the Colombian official’s statements, with the government indicating through its spokesperson that the lack of progress—even on confidence-building measures—is due to the other side.

“And we hope that Mr. Erchiurman’s stance will change at the meeting on August 26.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

Erhurman himself, however, sees that ground is beginning to be laid for renegotiation of the Cyprus issue.

He
emphasized that no decision can be made without Turkey’s consent.

“There is no alternative but to act in coordination with Turkey. A 5+1 meeting without Turkey is not possible. No settlement agreement to which Turkey does not say yes can come into effect. And this applies to the other guarantors as well.”
Tufan Erhurman – Turkish Cypriot leader

In fact, he didn’t even mention a federation, saying that we shouldn’t be discussing the name of the model, but rather its substance, the transition period, and the steps that will make life easier for the communities.
At the same time, he left little hope for an agreement on confidence-building measures, accusing Nicos Christodoulides of proposing different crossing points than those agreed upon in New York, thereby preventing an agreement from being reached.
