The owner of the AlphaMarts supermarket chain has issued a written statement in response to the unsubstantiated and baseless accusations leveled against him by the leader of “Direct Democracy” and Member of the European Parliament, Fidias Panayiotou, in a written statement by Andreas Papaellinas, owner of the AlphaMega hypermarkets and the Alpha Cyprus Group.

As he notes, “in light of recent public statements by MEP Mr. Fedia Panagiotou, which implicate me personally and professionally in connection with solar farms, I consider it my duty to set the record straight.”

“These specific statements do not correspond to reality and create a false impression of our business activities. The solar power facilities referred to by Mr. Panagiotou have been developed exclusively to meet the needs of our businesses, with the primary goal of reducing our company’s carbon footprint. Therefore, the claim that we are making millions from solar farms, as stated by Mr. Panagiotou, is untrue.”

Mr. Papaellinas notes that “public debate on energy costs is entirely legitimate and necessary. This is an issue that directly affects households, businesses, and the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy.”

“Precisely for this reason, however, the discussion must be based on factual data, documented evidence, and responsible reporting. Making public allegations against individuals and businesses requires prior verification of the relevant information. And Mr. Fidias Panagiotou, as a Member of the European Parliament, has a duty to consult with all parties involved before reaching any conclusions.”

Andreas Papaellinas emphasizes that “creating a false impression through inaccurate reports contributes neither to the proper informing of citizens nor to the substantive dialogue our country needs on such an important issue.”
