Yesterday was a difficult day for the residents of Agia Marina Chrysochou, as heavy rainfall was accompanied by very strong winds, causing significant damage to crops, greenhouses, homes, and solar power installations.
Speaking about the current situation in the area, the Deputy Mayor of Agia Marina Chrysochous, Patroklos Evangelou, noted that, although the rains are beneficial for both farmers and nature, the very strong winds caused serious problems.
As he explained, approximately five to six greenhouses sustained damage, while damage to residential roofs and destruction of photovoltaic installations were also reported.
According to Mr. Evangelou, the damage to agricultural plantations—which were in the pre-harvest stage—is particularly severe. Among other crops, avocado and mango plantations have been damaged, with producers facing significant losses.
The Deputy Mayor of Agia Marina, Chrysouchou, called on the government and the District Administration to immediately begin assessing the damage so that, where warranted, the necessary compensation can be provided to those affected.
“Once again, we are waiting for the government and the District Administration to come and assess the damage and determine where compensation should be provided to the people,” he said.
As an example, Mr. Evangelou cited a greenhouse in the area that has been completely destroyed, adding that the damage is estimated at over €30,000. He emphasized the need for immediate intervention by the Department of Agriculture to support not only this particular producer but also the other farmers in the area who have suffered losses.
