A new attack by an inmate against a prison guard while on duty sparked strong reactions and a decision to stage a “silent protest.”
In a statement, the Prison Guards Branch Council of the Pan-Cyprian Union “Isotita” denounced state apathy, tragic understaffing, and uncontrolled overcrowding, while also announcing that it is suspending all further public statements as a final act of protest against institutional inaction.

The “Equality” Prison Guards’ Sectoral Council condemns the incident and announces that it will not issue any further statements as a sign of protest against government apathy.
The statement reads as follows:
Condemnation of a Cowardly Attack on a Colleague – Silence as a Last Resort to Protest State Apathy
We express our unwavering support and wholeheartedly wish a speedy recovery to our colleague, who today fell victim to a cowardly and unprovoked attack by an inmate while on duty. This unacceptable incident confirms our worst fears in the most dramatic way and highlights the utterly deplorable conditions under which we are called upon to perform our duties.
The non-existent safety measures for prison guards, a direct consequence of tragic understaffing and uncontrolled overcrowding, constitutes a flagrant violation of the very legislation on Occupational Safety and Health. The State, as an employer, fails daily and spectacularly to ensure a safe working environment. Our fundamental right to return home safely to our families after our shift has now become a luxury. The responsibility for this ongoing disgrace lies solely with those who, although fully aware of the problems, remain criminally indifferent and incapable of providing meaningful solutions.
As a minimal gesture of protest against this prolonged institutional failure and the mockery of our safety, the Sectoral Council announces that it will make absolutely no further public statements on the matter. Our silence from this point forward is the most resounding response to their inaction.
