Two pig farms in Kato Moni are being relocated; the Cabinet has approved the plan

The goal is to reduce the odor

A plan to relocate the fattening units of two pig farms in Kato Moni within the next two years has been approved by the Cabinet, with the aim of significantly reducing the odor and nuisance that the community has been facing for decades, according to the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Ilias Myrianthos.

In his remarks on Friday evening, on behalf of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, at the annual traditional evening celebration in Kato Moni, the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare stated that the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, in consultation with the community and the affected pig farmers, has moved forward with the relevant plan.

Mr. Myrianthos described the foul odor and nuisance caused by pig farms as one of the most serious problems Kato Moni has faced for decades, noting that it directly affects residents’ daily lives and quality of life.

As he said, the relocation of the fattening facilities is an important step and is expected to significantly reduce the nuisance. He added, however, that the situation will continue to be monitored and the results of the interventions will be evaluated so that, if necessary, additional measures can be considered. The Commissioner’s Office, he noted, will remain in contact with the community and the relevant agencies.

Speaking more broadly about rural development, Mr. Myrianthos said that supporting communities is a priority for the Government, with the goal of enabling young people to remain in their hometowns and families to have the opportunity to settle in rural areas. In this context, he referred to affordable housing, access to services, and the creation of job opportunities.

He noted that Kato Moni is included in the Housing Plan for the Revitalization of Mountainous, Frontier and Disadvantaged Areas, through which financial assistance is provided for the purchase of a home for permanent owner-occupancy.

The Commissioner also referred to the restoration of the Agioi Iliophoton trail, the “Nature Trail,” which connects Kato Moni with Ano Moni. The project was completed in 2025 with European funding through the Grant Program of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

Finally, he emphasized that environmental protection is directly linked to development and quality of life in communities, highlighting the importance of air and water quality, proper waste management, and the protection of the natural landscape.
