The importance of an interdisciplinary approach and close collaboration among different medical specialties for the early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of patients with rheumatic and autoimmune diseases was emphasized by Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides in his opening remarks at the workshop “Rheumatology Meets Other Specialties,” held on Saturday in Nicosia.

As he noted, many rheumatic and autoimmune diseases are not limited to the joints or the musculoskeletal system, but can affect, among other things, the skin, the kidneys, the blood, and the nervous system, thereby requiring the involvement of more than one medical specialty.

For the patient, he said, coordination among doctors can reduce delays in diagnosis, prevent fragmented interventions, and lead to a treatment plan that takes into account the patient’s overall health.

The Minister of Health noted that advances in medicine have offered new diagnostic capabilities and more effective treatments, while also increasing the volume and specialization of the knowledge that healthcare professionals are called upon to manage.

He pointed out that an interdisciplinary approach does not depend solely on the coexistence of different specialties, but requires “consistent channels of communication, a clear division of responsibilities, and a willingness to draw on each other’s knowledge for the benefit of the patient.”

Referring to the role of the government, Mr. Charalambidis said that it has a responsibility to shape a healthcare system in which patients receive comprehensive care “without getting lost among services and specialties.”

This, he added, requires proper coordination, appropriate referral procedures, and the utilization of the scientific expertise available in Cyprus.

At the same time, he noted that the Ministry of Health recognizes the role of scientific societies in advancing clinical practice through education, the formulation of scientific positions, and dialogue among healthcare professionals.

The conference was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Konstantinos Parperis. The Minister of Health noted that this dedication reflects the medical community’s appreciation for his scientific work and contributions, both in Cyprus and abroad.

Finally, he congratulated the Cyprus Rheumatology Society and the other scientific societies that participated in the event, expressing the hope that the discussions would contribute to a better understanding of complex cases and closer collaboration among specialties.

“The results of this collaboration must be evident where they matter most: in diagnosis, treatment, and the daily care of the patient,” he concluded.
