Hourly workers are ready to respond immediately, universally, and forcefully if no agreement is reached

The employees' main goal is an immediate increase in wages and starting salaries.

The government’s hourly-wage staff states that it remains ready to respond immediately, comprehensively, and forcefully, in the event of a delay or breach of the timeline for reaching an agreement with the labor unions by September 28, 2026, as reported by PASYEK-PEO.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, following a meeting of its expanded Executive Council, the union states that the employees’ primary goal is the immediate improvement of wages and starting salaries, as part of the renewal of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for hourly-paid government employees for the years 2025–2027.

PASYEK-PEO notes that the 24-hour pan-Cypriot strike announced for September 17 was suspended following the intervention of the President of the Republic and commitments made by him and the Minister of Financeto engage in immediate negotiations and reach an agreement.

“The suspension of the planned strike actions last week was not a blank check,” the union states, noting that the decision was made as an act of responsibility, based on the commitments that had been made.

PASYEK-PEO is calling for intensive and substantive meetings with the Minister of Finance to be held immediately in the coming days, with the aim of reaching an agreement that will pave the way for an immediate improvement in salaries and starting wages.

At the same time, he states that he will not accept any deviation from the timeline which, as he notes, was set by the President of the Republic, nor “any deviation” from what, according to the union, was agreed upon during the meeting at the Presidential Palace on September 16.

The union calls on hourly-wage workers to participate and rally behind the PEO, reiterating that “it remains steadfast in the principles and demands it has set forth from the outset and will not take even a single step back from its goal of improving wages and starting salaries.”
