A major shock in European basketball… Monaco announced that it is ceasing operations entirely, having failed to find a solution to the serious financial problems that had arisen in recent months.
The final straw was the club’s failure to secure a license to compete in the French league.
The announcement reads as follows:
“Dear Rocha family,
Today is a sad day.
Despite all the efforts made, Monaco has been placed in suspension of payments. The club will now take a hiatus, in the hope of finding a path toward restructuring and, someday, restarting the project.
The Red team is leaving the court after finishing last season undefeated in domestic competitions, with all the major French trophies in its collection.
In its five seasons in the EuroLeague, Monaco defeated all the major European powers that stood in its way. Winning the EuroCup in 2021 gave the Principality its first-ever European title in a team sport.
No one can take away what we’ve built over these 12 years.
Three French championships. Four Leaders Cups. Two French Cups. One Super Cup. Two EuroLeague Final Fours, one of which included a trip to the final. A record filled with victories and trophies that will forever be part of Monaco’s sporting history.
And yet, the greatest success was never a trophy.
It was you!
The Roja family: unique, passionate, and incredibly loyal. Those thousands of voices, the flags and jerseys, the trips, that loyalty. What was created in the stands and around this team far surpasses any victory, no matter how great, or any title, no matter how significant.
This legacy cannot be erased. Nor can the fighting spirit that has always characterized Monaco.
The ultimate goal remains to see Monaco return to the place it deserves, and we can only hope that, as soon as possible, the Roja team will shine once again in the Gaston Medecin arena, that the Roja team’s massive flag will fly once more above the stands, and that thousands of voices will roar in unison once again:
DAGHE MUNEGU!
The future of men’s basketball in Monaco now lies in the hands of the ASM Amateur Division: its administrators, coaches, young athletes, and its first team, which competes in Nationale 3.
Monaco is passing the torch to them today, with the hope that one day the red and white will return to the highest level.
Until then, what we’ve built together remains.
Thank you, the Rocha family.”
