Things are heating up around the GSI, as—in addition to the Greek agenda during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s meetings in Athens— the project was also discussed at the summit of the nine Mediterranean states in Croatia.

To be precise, it was one of the key topics of discussion at a meeting between Nikos Christodoulides, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The goal was to determine the next steps.

“Referring to the GSI, the President emphasized the project’s immense importance, noting its benefits for the European Union’s energy security and self-sufficiency, as well as its significance within the framework of the India-Middle East-Europe (IMEC).”
Victor Papadopoulos – Director of the President’s Press Office

Referring to the GSI, the President emphasized the project’s immense importance, noting its benefits for the European Union’s energy security and self-sufficiency, as well as its significance within the framework of the India-Middle East-Europe (IMEC).

The President referred to the project and to the thematic session on preparations for the upcoming European Council, raising issues concerning Europe’s energy security and the Republic of Cyprus’s contribution in this area, as well as Cyprus’s connectivity with the rest of Europe.

The skyrocketing rise in fuel prices was the top issue at the meeting of the nine Mediterranean states.
In the presence of Ursula von der Leyen, it was decided to ask the European Union to take initiatives to support citizens and businesses in order to protect European competitiveness.

The meeting focused on the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, which certainly affect the energy sector, while there was also an extensive discussion on migration.

“Cyprus is geographically blessed to be situated at the crossroads of three continents. And we have capitalized on our position by building on our capabilities with the goal of serving as a stable, reliable, and predictable partner between Europe and the broader Middle East.”
Nikos Christodoulides – President of the Republic

On the sidelines of the Summit, the President of the Republic met with the President of the European Commission, discussing the remaining steps toward Cyprus’s full accession to the Schengen Area.
