The establishment of the National Civil Protection Mechanism, the operation of a specialized Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, and a court ruling that upheld the revocation of subsidiary protection status for a third-country national, the Presidentin a video message on Sunday, citing these as three recent developments in the effort to strengthen the country’s security.
The President stated that the National Civil Protection Mechanism will coordinate the relevant agencies, with clearly defined responsibilities, unified planning and coordination, with the aim of more effectively addressing natural and other crises.
Referring to the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and drawing on the modern models of organizations such as Europol and the FBI, he notes that this represents a reform in the approach to combating serious and organized crime, by consolidating critical operational capabilities of the police under a single command, the use of technology, and closer cooperation with European and international law enforcement authorities.
The third development, according to the President, concerns a decision by the Administrative Court for International Protection, which ruled that the revocation of the subsidiary protection status of a third-country national who violated public order was lawful.
President Christodoulides notes that “the decision confirms the absolute success of our migration strategy, which is yielding results, as well as the correctness and legality of our policy to revoke international protection status in cases of violations of public order and security in our country.”
At the same time, he notes that the government, “with a plan, specific strategies, and the necessary political will,” seeks to build “a state that acts proactively, protects, and responds” to security needs in areas such as the economy, labor, education, and health.
“This is the approach that guides all our policies and reforms for a more modern and stronger Cyprus. Together, we continue to transform our Cyprus by providing security across all sectors,” she concludes.
