Eleven people were injured by gunfire and another was injured while trying to escape late Saturday night near a college campus in Florida, state authorities in this southeastern U.S. state announced.
The incident took place near the campus of Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University on Perry Street, according to the university itself; police counted six adults and six minors among the victims.
“At least three of the victims who were struck by bullets suffered serious injuries, while nine others are reportedly in stable condition,” the Tallahassee Police Department noted in a statement it released.
According to initial reports, a “fight” broke out before the shooting, according to police, who did not provide further details.
Police Chief Lawrence Revel emphasized that it is “shocking” that children were among the victims.
According to the tabloid New York Post, the youngest victim is 11 years old. The police did not immediately respond when the Reuters news agency asked for comment on this information.
According to the same report, the altercation broke out during a celebration and escalated into an exchange of gunfire between two or three people last night.
The Tallahassee Police Department clarified that an investigation is being conducted by a specialized violent crime unit.
