Big news for DISY tomorrow: Averof Neophytou and Giorgos Pamporidis to submit their candidacies

"unity" is the biggest question for pindarou

Big things are in store tomorrow at the Democratic Alarm, as—barring any dramatic surprises—Averof Neophytou and George Pamporidis will submit their candidacies.

The official submission of candidacies will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the party’s headquarters on Pindarou Street, with the two contenders having already submitted the required signatures of supporters.

The big question hanging over DISY’s offices, of course, is “unity” and how the party will move forward from here.

In an interview with “Fileleftheros,” former Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Anastasia Anthousi emphasizes that tensions must be defused, while expressing her support for Giorgos Pamboridis.

ANASTASIA ANTHOUSI—Former Deputy Minister of Social Welfare: “I won’t
hide the fact that the current climate is a concern of mine as well. The stakes regarding how the internal party process will be handled—as well as what comes next—are enormous. The candidates and their supporters, as well as the leadership, bear a great responsibility. “That is why tensions must be defused, and we must have an internal party contest free of personal disputes.”

AKEL is still searching for a candidate, while an exclusive report by Alpha on Sunday caused a stir, revealing that the party had indefinitely expelled former Limassol MP Kostas Kostas.

According to the report by Iakovos Iakovou, the decision was taken unanimously in early October following a report drafted by the Central Audit Committee, which is responsible for investigating violations of the party’s bylaws and recommending disciplinary sanctions.

However, developments are also taking place within EDEK. The Congress approved, almost unanimously, significant amendments to the party’s bylaws, the most significant of which are the expansion of the Central Committee and the Political Bureau and the reinstatement of the Central Organizational Secretary and the Executive Secretariat. This development results in the abolition of the statutory position of General Director, which was held by Morfakis Solomounidis.

SOFIA CHRISTODOULOU MAKRI—EDEK President: “And
today, fellow party members, this is our greatest challenge. It is worth fighting for a strong, serious, dignified, and once again proud EDEK.”

Notable among those present were former members who had been expelled, such as Kostis Efstathiou and Dimitris Papadakis.

The Pan-Cyprian Congress will be held on Saturday, December 12, while the election process to select the new leadership and members of the Central Committee will take place the following day.
