The new Central Prison, which is planned to be built in the Agios Sozomenos area in the Nicosia District, will include a chapel, a mosque, and fourteen other sections.
Justice Minister Konstantinos Fytiris presented the preliminary plans today before the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, as part of the debate on the new 2027 state budget. He explained that the plans concern the housing and education of 1,500 inmates and that the relevant funding also includes the upgrading of the existing correctional facility.
Where the Juvenile Detention Center Will Be Located
As Mr. Fytiris also announced, prefabricated facilities are expected to be erected next to the existing correctional facility to house the Juvenile Detention Center.
At the same time, he announced that the detention facility in Menogia will no longer be used as a Juvenile Detention Center and will be converted into police holding cells, as a measure to alleviate the current overcrowding at police stations.
What he proposes regarding attacks on food delivery workers
Mr. Fytiris also submitted proposals regarding how to address the phenomenon of attacks on food delivery workers, which involve providing them with a special watch connected to law enforcement authorities as a “red button” to use in dangerous situations they encounter. He also recommended that food delivery companies prohibit deliveries to dangerous locations.
Measures Against Crime
During his appearance in Parliament, the Minister of Justice also outlined the authorities’ actions against organized crime and in the fight against drugs, presenting specific data from the previous period.
He also noted that the so-called Cypriot FBI is officially known as the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (DAOE).
