In Cyprus, the lessons of 1940 remain relevant today, said Education Minister Athina Michaelidou, speaking Tuesday evening at the commemorative event marking October 28, 1940, at the Omonia Aradippou Association.

“For more than 52 years, our homeland has been experiencing the consequences of the illegal Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation. Our ‘NO’ to the fait accompli of the invasion, our ‘NO’ to oblivion and to compromising with injustice, is our daily struggle. With faith in international law, but above all with our internal unity, we continue to advocate for a reunified, free, modern, and safe Cyprus for all its lawful residents,” he said.

To this end, he continued, the President of the Republic has made the immediate resolution of the current situation the top priority of his administration. “Through diplomatic efforts, leveraging our status as a European member state, and strengthening our strategic alliances on the international stage, he is taking tireless and methodical steps to resume talks,” she said.

According to the Minister of Education, the goal remains to achieve a sustainable, workable, and fair solution to the Cyprus problem, based on United Nations resolutions and the principles of the European Union. A solution that, as she said, will free our homeland from the occupying forces and the anachronistic guarantee systems.

He also noted that the Ministry of Education’s primary goal is to transform historical memory into a living experience. “We cultivate the ethos of a free person in our schools every day,” he said, adding that space and time are devoted to skills, research, and critical thinking. “We are working toward this kind of education, and it constitutes the strongest foundation for the progress and promising future of our Cyprus, as well as for the entire Hellenic world,” he stated.
