Patrick Stewart passed away at the age of 86. The versatile English actor was known for his career in theater, film, and television, and he portrayed Captain Picard in the Star Trek film and television universe.

Kelly Bush Novak, Stewart’s longtime publicist, announced in a statement on Thursday, October 29:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away yesterday, at his home in Los Angeles, with his beloved wife, Sunny, after a brief and moving battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

He was in the loving embrace of his family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayers, tears, laughter, and that deep emotion that only he could inspire, after a lifetime dedicated to all of us.

We will forever cherish the peaceful expression and serenity on his face, a lasting reminder of his unwavering grace.”

Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, England. He was the son of Gladys Stewart (née Baroclaf), who worked in the textile industry, and Alfred Stewart, a senior noncommissioned officer in the British Army with the rank of regimental sergeant major. He was the youngest of three boys and developed a love for acting at an early age, thanks to the encouragement of an English teacher at his school who introduced him to Shakespeare’s works, according to The Guardian.

At the age of 11, he began studying theater at Mirfield Secondary Modern School, and at 15, he left school to devote himself to the local theater.

According to his official website, in 1957 he received a full scholarship to attend the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. That is where his professional career began, with his stage debut in 1959 as Cutpurse in the production of *Cyrano de Bergerac*.

His first television appearance came in 1967, when he played a firefighter on the series *Coronation Street*. Just four years later, he made his Broadway debut, playing Snout in *A Midsummer Night’s Dream*.
