Four people were killed and 12 were injured—one of whom is in critical condition—when an Italian Chinook military helicopter crashed in Bosnia.

The helicopter was part of the Eufor Althea mission.

“Eufor can confirm that an Italian CH-47 Chinook belonging to Eufor crashed earlier today in Brčko (in northeastern Bosnia). As a result of the accident, several members of the EUFOR personnel were tragically killed and others were seriously injured,” stated the Italian command of the European force.

In its statement, EUFOR did not specify the nationalities of the victims. It also noted that the helicopter was conducting a “routine operation” and that there were no civilian casualties.

A video has circulated on social media which, according to the Bosnian media outlet Avaz, captures the moment the military helicopter crashed. Initial images from the scene show the extent of the destruction, with the aircraft having sustained extensive damage.

Immediately after the accident, police forces from the Brčko District, fire trucks, and ambulances rushed to the area, while the area was cordoned off to facilitate rescue operations and the investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

Many local media outlets published photos of the wrecked helicopter, which crashed in a flat grassland area, near the village of Gorica in Brčko, 180 kilometers from Sarajevo.

EUFOR has deployed thousands of troops in Bosnia with a mandate to maintain peace.

In a post on X, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote that this tragic news “causes great pain.”

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those participating in the mission for peace and stability in the region who are going through moments of anguish,” the Italian prime minister added.
