At exactly 12:30 p.m., the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus Issue, María Ángela Olguín, crossed the threshold of the Presidential Palace, marking her first visit to Cyprus since Antonio Guterres’s much-discussed visit to Nicosia last July.

Ms. Olguín is expected to discuss with the President of the Republic the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, as well as the topics discussed during the recent meetings she and the UN Secretary-General had with Nicos Christodoulides in New York and on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly.

Mr. Guterres’s Personal Envoy is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman next Monday, as he himself is in Turkey for the Summit of Turkic-Speaking Countries, where he spoke about the need to lift the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, which he considers directly linked to the resolution of the Cyprus problem.

The UN has announced a joint meeting between Olgin, Christodoulides, and Erciyaman on November 9, 2026, following the weekly meetings between the two leaders where, according to the Greek Cypriot side, the terms of reference, substance, and methodology have been discussed, with the aim of resuming talks on a solution to the Cyprus problem.

It should be recalled that Ms. Olgin, in an article she wrote for the newspaper “Politis” on October 17, 2026, stated, among other things: “If, over the past two years, the two sides have failed to agree even on opening a roadblock to facilitate communication, nor on demining or a joint effort to eliminate plastic pollution across the entire island, as well as in many other areas where they could cooperate, how can they agree on a political, economic, and social model capable of overcoming decades of division and the growing estrangement between the two communities?”

This statement prompted a response from President Nikos Christodoulides, who argued that Ms. Olgin knows very well which side accepted and which rejected the UN Secretary-General’s proposal regarding a specific roadblock.
