The coming days are crucial for the Cyprus issue, as the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, who attended the thanksgiving service for the national anniversary of October 28 and subsequently reviewed the parade held in Nicosia, on the occasion of the anniversary.

In remarks to reporters after the parade concluded, the President of the Republic said, “I wish the Hellenic people many happy returns, and many happy returns to Greeks everywhere. I congratulate all those who participated in today’s parade—our students, our schoolchildren, the occupied municipalities and communities, and the organized groups. I would like to welcome the Lyceum of Greek Women of Kavala and the Corfu Philharmonic Orchestra to Cyprus.

There are many lessons to be drawn from the epic events of 1940 and the Greek resistance. The one I would like to focus on is that when it comes to issues of sovereignty and dignity, there can be neither compromise nor concession. Whatever the cost, our brothers in Greece proved that on these issues there can be no compromises or concessions.

I would also like to point out the fact—which is often forgotten by some—that nearly 20,000 Cypriots participated and stood alongside Greece and the Allied forces, a large number of our compatriots were lost in battle, which demonstrates—and this is why we truly wish to honor such anniversaries—that we must follow the examples set by the Greeks of 1940, adapted to today’s realities.

Despite the challenges, despite the difficulties and problems, we do not rest on our laurels when it comes to the need for liberation, for an end to the occupation, and for the reunification of our homeland. I repeat, there are many problems, many difficulties, and many challenges, but, considering what the state of affairs was in early 2023, it turns out that when there is a concrete plan, when there is strategic planning, when there is perseverance and patience, yes, positive results can be achieved.

The coming days are important. A meeting took place yesterday (with the Turkish Cypriot leader); it took place in a very positive atmosphere, the discussion was constructive, and I hope, this is what I want to promise today to the Cypriot people on such an important day for Hellenism: that I will do everything humanly possible to ensure positive developments.”

When asked whether there have been any developments regarding the NAVTEX issue concerning the GSI and whether it is a matter of hours, the President of the Republic said that “whatever needs to be done regarding this specific issue is being done by the Republic of Cyprus, in connection with the exercise of the Republic of Cyprus’s sovereign rights, away from the spotlight and without a lot of public statements.”
