Maria Angela Olguín, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus Issue, expressed optimism following her one-hour meeting today at the Presidential Palace with the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides.

As she stated, the purpose of her extended stay in Nicosia is to push for progress, in line with António Guterres’s mandate to work toward developments in the Cyprus issue, until the last day of his term as UN Secretary-General.

She expressed the hope “that we will be able to see some progress,” following her meeting on Monday with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and her joint meeting with both leaders scheduled for November 9, 2026.

Ms. Olgin also expressed optimism about convening an Informal Multilateral Conference on the Cyprus issue before the end of the year, provided there is progress on the chapters of substance, methodology, and the terms of reference.

When asked if she herself was interested in running for the position of UN Secretary-General, she replied in the negative.
