The German youth movement “Gen Z regelt” (Gen Z Has the Floor) is calling on citizens to participate today in rallies in 34 cities across the country, and organizers expect more than 165,000 people to attend.

Protesters will take to the streets to protest against mandatory military service and the high cost of living, and to demand investment in education, social security, healthcare, and the fight against climate change.

The movement explicitly calls for peaceful protest and rejects all forms of violence. On their website, the organizers state that they do not want extremist groups or unconstitutional symbols at their demonstrations.

They also warn protesters not to bring glass objects or weapons and to avoid any provocation toward the police.

Stores in some areas will remain closed because their owners fear damage. Youth protests this month in France escalated into widespread violent riots, with looting and arson.

German security authorities announced that they have not received any information regarding calls for violence during the protests.

However, “sections of the far-left extremist scene as well as individual groups linked to extremism from abroad” are also responding to calls to participate, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior.

Yesterday, Friday, organizers pointed out that the focus on the risk of violence at the protests distracts from the real issues they are trying to raise.

According to the organizers, the “Gen Z regelt” movement was created just a few weeks ago and has a central coordinating team of 30 people.

While the group uses its website to publicize protests in 34 cities, it accepts responsibility for the content and organization of only four of them—in Cologne, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich.
