There is a heavy presence of mosquitoes, even though the calendar says it’s October 31. But what is causing this mosquito outbreak?
As Herodotus Herodotus, Head of Public Health Services, explained to us, the rains create breeding grounds, and because temperatures remain above 20 degrees, it’s natural for mosquitoes to be present.
To reduce their numbers, the temperature would need to drop below 4 or 5 degrees, as he explained.
At the same time, the mosquito control program continues, with public health services and municipalities taking action within city limits.
Meanwhile, the tiger mosquito, which first appeared in Cyprus in 2023, has now become established. This makes the nuisance more intense, as it is active and bites throughout the day, unlike Culex mosquitoes, which usually bite at night and at dusk.
As for preventing mosquito breeding in the home, it is emphasized that a key measure is the regular removal of any standing water, so that it does not remain stagnant for more than 5 days.
Specifically, public health authorities recommend that citizens take actions such as emptying water from plant saucers, buckets, watering cans, and other containers; turning over objects that hold water; and cleaning gutters, grates, and drains.
For water storage containers (barrels, cisterns), it is recommended to cover the opening and to change the water frequently in animal and bird drinking troughs.
It is recommended to properly maintain swimming pools and decorative ponds, and to frequently inspect watering tanks and drain the water.
To protect the interior of homes, it is helpful to install screens on doors and windows, and insect repellents can also be used.
