Emiliano Martínez played with a broken finger in both the Europa League final and the World Cup final. He revealed this in his comments, also highlighting the great self-sacrifice he showed in order to help his teams.
“I broke my finger in the Europa League final. When the doctor showed me the X-ray, I started crying because I thought I’d miss the World Cup.
Scaloni sent me a message and said, ‘Whether you make it or not, I’ll support you… come anyway.’ We decided not to have surgery. Adidas made me a special glove, and I played with my finger completely wrapped up,” he said, adding:
“I could only feel my four fingers. I couldn’t even train with regular soccer balls. Until the match against Switzerland, I trained with volleyballs.
How much did that affect me at the World Cup? Ten out of ten. I was basically like a zombie. Every time my hand touched the ground, I saw stars. I cried until midnight because my finger had swollen up like a sausage.
After the World Cup, I had another X-ray, and the finger was still broken in two. Even today, I play through the pain. At some point, I’ll have to have surgery,” he concluded.
