Newborn with Legionnaires’ disease: His condition remains critical; he is being treated with mechanical ventilation

"green light" from the ministry of health for the reopening of the clinic

The condition of the infant diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease and currently being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Makarios Hospital remains critical, OKYPY spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou told CNA.

As Mr. Charilaou noted, there has been no change in the infant’s condition, which remains critical, according to the assessment of the attending physicians.

The infant remains hospitalized on mechanical support in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Makareio Hospital, receiving all appropriate medical treatment.

It should be noted that laboratory test results for Legionella were negative at the private clinic in Nicosia, where the bacterium had been detected and operations had been temporarily suspended.

This development paved the way for the clinic’s reopening, following approval from the Ministry of Health.

What Is Legionnaires’ Disease?

According to the Medical Services, Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the Legionella bacterium and primarily manifests as pneumonia, which can be severe and potentially fatal.

Its name derives from an outbreak recorded in 1976 at a gathering of American Legion members in Philadelphia.

The bacterium grows in natural and artificial water systems, with an ideal growth temperature between 20 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Potential sources of contamination include water tanks, pipes, faucets, showers, cooling towers, and hot and cold water systems, especially when the water remains stagnant.

Transmission occurs primarily through the inhalation of microscopic water droplets (aerosols) containing the bacterium.

According to scientific data, the disease is not transmitted from person to person.
